Some website owners may think that once their site is live all they have to do is sit back and wait for traffic to start pouring in. This is not always the case, many new websites get the go ahead and are made live each day, most websites are just left alone to do all the work. It can be a good idea to set goals to track your websites progress online, you can use Google Analytics to do so.
Google Analytics will also allow you to view the traffic coming into your website, most web developers would set this up and give you access to view these statistics.
To set up new goals you will have to login to Google Analytics using your Google account details. From there you will need to select the web account that you want to set the goals for. You will be able to find your website here providing that your web developer has coded Google Analytics tracking into your website. Next you will need to select ‘Conversions‘, ‘Goals’ and then ‘Overview’ on the left and side of the Google Analytics control panel.
You should give thought to what the goals of your website are going to be. I have worked with a lot of clients that do not have any goals set and I personally think a website with goals has good potential. Goals are not 100% necessary but they will help set out a guideline for a successful website. The common mistake of not setting goals happens all the time, if you really want your website to do well you have to continue to work with it and market it, otherwise the traffic to your site will slowly die out. Frequently reviewing your goals will show areas on your site which may need updating or restructuring.
The available goal types and what they mean.
1. URL Destination: This will track and record data when a visitor lands on your set URL destination. For example, yourdomain.co.uk/services.
2. URL Destination (with funnel): This is the same as a normal URL destination but with a set path in order for the goal to be completed. For example, yourdomain.co.uk/services ‘visitor clicks on enquiry form’, ‘visitor sends enquiry’.
3. Time On Site: This will allow you to set a required time the visitor spends on your website for the goal to be completed. For example, ‘Greater than’, ’10 Minutes’.
4. Page/Visit: This will allow you to set a number of pages a visitor has to view in order for the goal to be completed. For example, ‘Equal to’, ’5 Pages’.
5. Event: This goal is best utilised when you wish to record data of an event a visitors completes. For example, they download a file on your website.
Websites are one of the most powerful marketing tools at your disposal. They offer you a gateway which can be viewed by anyone worldwide (providing they have an internet connection). This great opportunity will allow you to steadily increase your online presence and make others aware of the products and services you might have to offer, this is the commonly the main purpose of a website. The advantages of having a site become clear, although it can take some time to grow a sufficient online presence capable of providing you the necessary amount of desired traffic to your site.
